The ImpactAlliantie is a Dutch network of 400 experts from research, policy and practice across sectors and organizations aimed at improving the organization and evaluation of the societal impact of scientific research by promoting the development, application and sharing of knowledge on the topics.

On June 27th, a live ImpactAlliantie event was organized at KWR. 60 participants explored how stakeholder engagement can be stimulated and coordinated in collaborative research. AquaConnect researchers Kirsty Holstead, Flavia Cosoveanu, Sophie Melchers, and Gerald Jan Ellen (see picture) presented the Aquaconnect project in 2 subsessions.

Several questions/statements were discussed. The main takeaways were:

  • When bridging the gap between science and end-users, it is important to consider the following:
    • Researchers face ethical dilemmas when providing advice based on incomplete data. Balancing scientific rigor with practical applicability is essential.
    • A liaison, such as a science communicator, can facilitate communication between researchers and stakeholders.
    • Clear wording is paramount for effective communication. Avoid jargon and ensure clarity.
    • Social scientists can play a crucial role in bridging the gap by understanding both scientific and stakeholder perspectives.
    • Make hidden interests explicit early on, even if stakeholders are unaware initially. Transparency builds trust.
    • Recognize the difference between truth-seeking (scientific knowledge) and applicable knowledge (practical solutions).
  • When embarking on any project, it’s crucial to engage with a diverse set of stakeholders. Not only governmental organisations, network organisations and SMEs but also try to think outside the ‘usual suspects’. For example, include water polluters and international partners with positive experiences. Consider the general public that you’re targeting and try to understand private companies’ motivations and values to have a productive interaction.
